Thea LaFond recently traveled to her birth country Dominica to celebrate her Olympic gold medal victory — the first-ever Olympic medal for the island nation in the Caribbean.
LaFond, who lives in Silver Spring and represented Dominica at the Paris Olympics, secured gold in the women’s triple jump on August 3. She was previously a teacher at John F. Kennedy High School, her alma mater, while also competing as an Olympian.
She returned to Silver Spring from Paris a couple of weeks ago before heading to Dominica for celebrations there. LaFond, used a wheelchair and crutches while there as she recovers from post-Olympics knee surgery.
In an interview with MCM, LaFond said she is looking forward to some rest and recovery before world championships next year.
